About

Prairie Avenue Lofts includes 138 condominium units over 11 floors. The brick, stone, and terra-cotta commercial loft was converted to residences in 2001. Built in 1922, the Atwell Building was one of Chicago's largest printing and publishing buildings and was designed by Alfred Samuel Alschule. The first three floors housed the Atwell Printing & Binding Company's manufacturing and publishing operations. Upper floors were leased to various textbook and magazine publishers and also served as the headquarters of Rotary International (1923–1928). In 1952, the nearby Revere Camera Company (320 E 21st St) purchased the building to expand the production of recording electronics. The building was acquired in 1960 by the 3M Company.
