The Whittier Building sits on a slightly sloping site in the Piedmont neighborhood located between Crown Hill and Elm Park at the corner of Pleasant and Fruit Street. Constructed in 1898 in the Romanesque Revival Style, the structure was designed as a luxury apartment building, unusual at a time when the only multiple dwellings were tenements, building associated with poverty, crime, disease, and desperation.
